We fixed the Wireless Toronto node inside the rinkhouse, and successfully created a temporary battery-powered mesh network that covered the entire park. We set up the temporary mesh so that we could get a sense of installation locations, the effect of the trees, etc. We're satisfied with the results, and will plan to go back to install the equipment permanently in the next week or two. If anyone's interesting in coming to help out, drop me an email. Gabe -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At the last volunteer meeting we created some smaller sub-groups of which the 'outreach' group is one. The last outreach meeting was a couple of weeks ago and we discussed ways to stimulate interest among WT users and 'fans', as well as just more ways to let the people of Toronto know that we exist and what we're doing with Wi-Fi. The outreach group will be meeting this Thursday (4th June). At the top of the agenda will be discussing our involvement in the BIG on Bloor ( http://bigonbloor.com) Festival which is happening in less than three weeks. Hillary has been in touch with the organizers and it seems we will be establishing a presence there by way of a mesh network and perhaps a stall or table manned by a bunch of volunteers. There's heaps of stuff to do before then, promotional materials to ready etc. and we're going to need as much help as we can - So if you're interested in lending a hand....generally being involved in anything to do with spreading the word about WT....or just hearing more, then feel free to come along - I'm sure we'll need as much help as we can get :-) We will be meeting this Thursday (4th) at 6:30pm at the Centre for Social Innovation at 215 Spadina on the 4th Floor. If you have any problems finding it or getting in then give me a call (647 407 6862) Speaking of outreach - check out our revitalized FB and Twitter pages. They both post similar content so feel free to choose your flavour http://twitter.com/WirelessToronto http://www.facebook.com/pages/Toronto-ON/Wireless-Toronto/13780966710?ref=ts Sorry for the short notice. Look forward to seeing you there. We put a NanoStation2 at the T.O. Tix office (where the existing Linksys router is), and an open-mesh MR3201A at each of the security office and the infobooth at the south-west corner of the square. For some reason, the node at the security office isn't connecting to the mesh. I'll prep another router and swap it in in the next few days. The node at the infobooth is up, though the stability of the link is lower than it'd normally be: there's a huge Luminato/L'Oreal tent between it and the gateway. We'll let the network run for a few days before removing the Linksys router and "officially" launching the new network. Last night Michael and I got two important pieces working for today's install: 1) A modification of the nodogsplash configuration to allow for a portal page without a splash page. (Meaning that users don't need to click "enter" before getting online.) 2) A custom.sh script which send usage data directly from the router to our auth server. The open-mesh dashboard only stores data for 24 hours; keeping historical usage data is important for us for several reasons. We need YOU! There are all kinds of ways you can be of help, from setting up and testing the network itself, helping people connect, telling people what we do to just hanging out and being a smiling face of our group of friendly volunteers. We are going to have a brief meeting on *Friday (19th) at The Centre for Social Innovation (215 Spadina, 4th Floor) at 6pm* just to go over what the following day will entail. I encourage you all to come along! I'm sure the more people we have involved the more awesome we can make the event. from Alex P.S. while I have your attention...did you know we're on Facebook and Twitter? Make sure to follow us at either of those places if that's your thing :-) http://twitter.com/wirelesstoronto http://www.facebook.com/pages/Toronto-ON/Wireless-Toronto/13780966710?ref=ts -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
