I'm conducting a 3 node mesh test on Saturday during the Toronto Freedom
Festival / Global Marijuana March.

I'll be near the main stage at the North/East end of the park.

The network is being used by the volunteers of the event who are doing a
live web-cast but I will be opening the network from time to time to
experiment and monitor activity.

Hello, fellow wi-fi'ers.

I was recently visiting my mom at 110 The Esplanade, which is right beside
the St.Lawrence
Market. I had my Wi-Fi enabled notebook comp with me. I found that I could
not get a strong signal
from the St. Lawrence (wirelesstoronto) Wi-Fi node. I had to stand outside
on her balcony to get the signal.
I used to be able to connect to it sitting in the living room.
Is the transmitter experiencing problems, or has it been moved to an other
place in the building?
It is supposed to be in the south market hall, right?
Maybe it needs a range extender/booster installed.

Any ideas what's going on? All help/info appreciated.

Hi Arvis --
The setup at St. Lawrence Market hasn't changed, but it's possible
that there's more interference than there used to be (from other area
wifi network, and/or from equipment inside the market), which might
explain why you're not able to pick up the signal anymore from your
mom's place.

Our goal is to make wifi available in public places -- for a strong
signal, I'd encourage you to pop down and grab a seat inside or
outside the market.

1) Possible involvement in Net Change Week.

3) Our response to the Wired Canada Program proposal, and the
subsequent call for free wifi in community housing.
4) Anything else that seems appropriate.

If the front door is locked and you can't get in through the cafe, use

On Thursday evening, TWO Wireless Toronto groups are meeting at the
Centre for Social Innovation: the "portal pages" group (led by Mo),
and the "outreach" group (led by Alex).  Since both groups have some
issues in common, let's meet together for a bit at 6:30, then split up
whenever it feels right to do so.

The "portal pages" group will discuss the future of our community
portal pages, and specifically the pilot project that we will be
deploying on the new mesh network we'll be installing at Yonge-Dundas
Square in the next couple of weeks.

Some of the "outreach" group topics might include:
- Populate our Facebook page
- Set up a Twitter account (but not before we decide how we're going to use it)
- Order some proper window stickers for venues, and distribute them
- Our blog
- Possible involvement in bigonbloor.com?
- Find other outdoor events in Toronto, where we could set up free
temporary wifi and get exposure?
- Review and revise the "pitch/sales" materials we use to recruit new
venues; including targeted materials for a Kensington Market mesh

Planet Geek Flemingdon Park food bank great linux-PC giveaway  
happening this Saturday.

Hi WTO ("Wireless Toronto" that is, not the other world trade one) folks 
-- sorry I had to miss the Atkinson Co-op meeting on Saturday, I hope it 
went well.

Many thanks to all of you who expressed support for our 
recycled-and-refurb'd-linux-PC train-and-grant session at Flemingdon 
Park food bank this past Saturday. It was a great success!

If you email me, I can shoot you a note with my first impressions of how 
it went, but in a nutshell, we diverted 20 complete systems from the 
landfill, showed the recipient households how they work, and sent them 
home with a new (to them) computer.

Now all we need to do is install mesh networking at the Flemingdon Park 
public housing complex (he said hopefully...)

this might sound like the start of a funny anecdote, but my brother's 
partner's mother lives in the northern-most apartment building on the 
east side of augusta ave., south of dundas st. (91 augusta, i believe).

according to her, its still toronto community housing - it causes me to 
wonder, are some of the buildings still part of the old social housing 
entity (aka "alexandra park"), and not yet converted to membership in 
the co-op?

unfortunately my blue ink scrawls from the advocacy and outreach meetings
resemble little more than just that - scribbles of blue ink.
However, on a slightly different note, one of the things that I was supposed
to do following the 'outreach' meeting was to think further about
WirelessToronto's social media presence and ways we might stimulate some
kind of communication/connection/discourse/presence with our users.
The idea was that, to many users, WirelessToronto might appear to be little
more than an open wifi signal. People can opportunistically log on, surf for
a bit, then forget about us altogether until they next happen to stumble on
our signal (aside: i'd be interested to see stats of how many people
regularly use the network as opposed to one-off users). Strategic use of our
Facebook 'Fan' page, in addition to a Twitter account (both linked to new
activity on the blog) might encourage discussion (and feedback etc) about
our group/the network/our service amongst the wider Toronto
(socialmedia-savy) community.

In an effort to understand how others have been doing this (and to judge
whether it is worthwhile or not), I've been attentively watching NYCWireless
and Ile Sans Fil's twitter accounts (and FB pages etc) to see how they are
going about it (http://twitter.com/NYCwireless, http://twitter.com/ISF) It
seems like something worthwhile pursuing. NYC's twitter is more just a
stream of information, and ISF's is a little more conversational with users,
ReTweeting people who are praising ISF service etc.

The 'outreach' meeting revealed two distinct directions for outreach. One
was related to communicating and encouraging new volunteers to become
involved in the group and the other was engaging the current users of the
network more in some way (and there is definitely an overlap between the
two). My thoughts are that an active presence in these social
networks/circles might remind users of our existence, encourage them to get
out and use the hotspots, educate others about what we do, as well as
potentially engage more WT volunteers. The 'outreach' could literally be as
little as a link to the Twitter/FB from our blog as well as perhaps the
portal pages themselves.

Posts to Twitter, for example, could be as minimal as alerting of a new WT
blog post, posting news on wifi in toronto, or as substantial as
communicating with users using our locations - basic troubleshooting,
reminding users it's sunny out and the wifi park is a great place to spend
an afternoon, hearing suggestions for new hotspots etc. :-)

Anyways. This is too long. But I hope it makes some sense.
Just as involvement in events/festivals such as BIGonBloor might help alert
others of our existence, I think we might benefit from reminding the people
of toronto  (and their followers, and their followers followers) that we are
out there and doing this wifi thing and that they should get out and use the
network or even get involved as a volunteer.

Hi Gabe - many thanks for the pointer to the wiki - its chock full of 
great info.

I'm a light-weight on the technical side of wireless, so I'm doing some 
reading up on hard tech issues pertaining to high-rise installs - not 
much to offer yet.

Interestingly, some helpful and and (to me) understandable discussions 
I've stumbled across, are on an apparently well-archived EDUCAUSE email 
list related to installation/operation of wireless LANs in 
college/university residences.

I can forward or post the link somewhere if its worthwhile.

Hello, fellow wi-fi'ers.

I was recently visiting my mom at 110 The Esplanade, which is right beside
the St.Lawrence
Market. I had my Wi-Fi enabled notebook comp with me. I found that I could
not get a strong signal
from the St. Lawrence (wirelesstoronto) Wi-Fi node. I had to stand outside
on her balcony to get the signal.
I used to be able to connect to it sitting in the living room.
Is the transmitter experiencing problems, or has it been moved to an other
place in the building?
It is supposed to be in the south market hall, right?
Maybe it needs a range extender/booster installed.

Any ideas what's going on? All help/info appreciated.

Hi Arvis --
The setup at St. Lawrence Market hasn't changed, but it's possible
that there's more interference than there used to be (from other area
wifi network, and/or from equipment inside the market), which might
explain why you're not able to pick up the signal anymore from your
mom's place.

Our goal is to make wifi available in public places -- for a strong
signal, I'd encourage you to pop down and grab a seat inside or
outside the market.

Centre for Social Innovation: the "portal pages" group (led by Mo),
and the "outreach" group (led by Alex).  Since both groups have some
issues in common, let's meet together for a bit at 6:30, then split up
whenever it feels right to do so.

The "portal pages" group will discuss the future of our community
portal pages, and specifically the pilot project that we will be
deploying on the new mesh network we'll be installing at Yonge-Dundas
Square in the next couple of weeks.

- Set up a Twitter account (but not before we decide how we're going to use it)
- Order some proper window stickers for venues, and distribute them

meant to circulate earlier, here's the free state-wide wifi pilot and plan
that BIF put together a couple of years ago. it could be helpful in building
a policy case around muni wifi.

Hi WTO ("Wireless Toronto" that is, not the other world trade one) folks 
-- sorry I had to miss the Atkinson Co-op meeting on Saturday, I hope it 
went well.

Many thanks to all of you who expressed support for our 
recycled-and-refurb'd-linux-PC train-and-grant session at Flemingdon 
Park food bank this past Saturday. It was a great success!

If you email me, I can shoot you a note with my first impressions of how 
it went, but in a nutshell, we diverted 20 complete systems from the 
landfill, showed the recipient households how they work, and sent them 
home with a new (to them) computer.

Now all we need to do is install mesh networking at the Flemingdon Park 
public housing complex (he said hopefully...)

anyone have any notes/impressions/brainwaves from the meeting with 
atkinson co-op?

this might sound like the start of a funny anecdote, but my brother's 
partner's mother lives in the northern-most apartment building on the 
east side of augusta ave., south of dundas st. (91 augusta, i believe).

according to her, its still toronto community housing - it causes me to 
wonder, are some of the buildings still part of the old social housing 
entity (aka "alexandra park"), and not yet converted to membership in 
the co-op?

unfortunately my blue ink scrawls from the advocacy and outreach meetings
resemble little more than just that - scribbles of blue ink.
However, on a slightly different note, one of the things that I was supposed
to do following the 'outreach' meeting was to think further about
WirelessToronto's social media presence and ways we might stimulate some
kind of communication/connection/discourse/presence with our users.
The idea was that, to many users, WirelessToronto might appear to be little
more than an open wifi signal. People can opportunistically log on, surf for
a bit, then forget about us altogether until they next happen to stumble on
our signal (aside: i'd be interested to see stats of how many people
regularly use the network as opposed to one-off users). Strategic use of our
Facebook 'Fan' page, in addition to a Twitter account (both linked to new
activity on the blog) might encourage discussion (and feedback etc) about
our group/the network/our service amongst the wider Toronto
(socialmedia-savy) community.

In an effort to understand how others have been doing this (and to judge
whether it is worthwhile or not), I've been attentively watching NYCWireless
and Ile Sans Fil's twitter accounts (and FB pages etc) to see how they are
going about it (http://twitter.com/NYCwireless, http://twitter.com/ISF) It
seems like something worthwhile pursuing. NYC's twitter is more just a
stream of information, and ISF's is a little more conversational with users,
ReTweeting people who are praising ISF service etc.

The 'outreach' meeting revealed two distinct directions for outreach. One
was related to communicating and encouraging new volunteers to become
involved in the group and the other was engaging the current users of the
network more in some way (and there is definitely an overlap between the
two). My thoughts are that an active presence in these social
networks/circles might remind users of our existence, encourage them to get
out and use the hotspots, educate others about what we do, as well as
potentially engage more WT volunteers. The 'outreach' could literally be as
little as a link to the Twitter/FB from our blog as well as perhaps the
portal pages themselves.

Posts to Twitter, for example, could be as minimal as alerting of a new WT
blog post, posting news on wifi in toronto, or as substantial as
communicating with users using our locations - basic troubleshooting,
reminding users it's sunny out and the wifi park is a great place to spend
an afternoon, hearing suggestions for new hotspots etc. :-)

Anyways. This is too long. But I hope it makes some sense.
Just as involvement in events/festivals such as BIGonBloor might help alert
others of our existence, I think we might benefit from reminding the people
of toronto  (and their followers, and their followers followers) that we are
out there and doing this wifi thing and that they should get out and use the
network or even get involved as a volunteer.

Hi Gabe - many thanks for the pointer to the wiki - its chock full of 
great info.

I'm a light-weight on the technical side of wireless, so I'm doing some 
reading up on hard tech issues pertaining to high-rise installs - not 
much to offer yet.

Interestingly, some helpful and and (to me) understandable discussions 
I've stumbled across, are on an apparently well-archived EDUCAUSE email 
list related to installation/operation of wireless LANs in 
college/university residences.

I can forward or post the link somewhere if its worthwhile.
