Hello all,
As you might remember, in the summer update email that Gabe sent out mention
was made of a public art project, In-Site Toronto, that WT is taking part
in.
To recap, In-Site Toronto will be a collection of new art projects presented
on the portal pages of wifi hotspots in the WT network. Once the project is
developed, the current start page that WT users see when they log in will be
a platform to showcase newly-commissioned media art at selected hotspots.
Six artists (Jeremy Bailey, Swintak, Brian Joseph Davis, Kelly Mark, Dave
Dyment, and Fedora Romita) are at work right now on their concepts, and the
works will be displayed on the network starting early next year. In-Site
Toronto is produced by Year Zero One, supported by the Canada Council, and
curated by yours truly (I also piloted a similar project on Montreal's Ile
Sans Fil network a few years ago). Now that production has kicked off, I'll
be sending emails to this list with regular updates on the project.
The benefits and challenges of using the portal page and the WT network as a
method of displaying art are many and it's crucial to get the artists
together with the WT volunteers that make the network happen, especially at
this time, when the artists are still working on their concepts.
So a discussion about the project has been added to the end of the agenda
for the volunteer meeting on Nov 9th, and the artists will be coming to the*
*meeting part of the way through. Unfortunately I will not be there but I do
look forward to hearing a recap from others.
I hope you enjoy meeting the artists! If you have any questions about the
project in general don't hesitate to drop me a line.
Best,
MK
