From gabe at pwd.ca Tue Aug 21 14:11:25 2007 From: gabe at pwd.ca (Gabe Sawhney) Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2007 14:11:25 -0400 Subject: [wirelesstoronto-news] news from Wireless Toronto Message-ID: <95b1c3780708211111r7b2060dco63343bfc2f3b32cf@mail.gmail.com> Wireless Toronto news: 1) Wireless Toronto at AlleyJaunt! 2) Wireless Wednesday on August 22nd 3) Next hacknight on September 4th 4) New hotspot: St. Louis Bar & Grill --- 1) Wireless Toronto at AlleyJaunt! Our installation at this year's AlleyJaunt was a success! Lots of people streamed through the garage, in rain or shine, and most (okay, ~1/2) seemed to both get and appreciate the ideas we were presenting. Several other artists remarked that visitors were talking about our piece while in their garage (oops) and we had a couple of visitors who'd like to include the installation in upcoming shows and events. It was actively interactive in a low-fi wordplay way and we have the SSID poetry pics to prove it. These will be posted to the Wireless Toronto website in coming days. We also drummed up some interest in Wireless Toronto and the work we do. Hopefully this translates into new venue opportunities and possibly new volunteers. Congrats and thanks to Michael, David, Edward, and Patrick! --- 2) Wireless Wednesday on August 22nd Join us at 7PM on Wednesday at Lot16 Bar (1136 Queen St. W., west of Dovercourt) for our monthly evening to celebrate our successes and drown our sorrows. It's casual, and some of the conversation will _not_ be about wifi. [NOTE: We've changed the start time to 8PM.] RSVP on upcoming: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/174658 --- 3) Next hacknight on September 4th Our next monthly hacknight is on September 4th -- we'll be working on the community portal pages. Part of what distinguishes Wireless Toronto's network from "normal" free wifi are our community portal pages -- the web pages that people see once they log into the network, which feature site-specific information about each particular hotspot location. At our last hacknight we came up with a list of easily-implementable features for the portal pages -- so this month, we're going to hack some APIs, PHP and CSS, and spiff up the portal pages. Or at least make some progress in that direction. Hacknight info: http://wiki.wirelesstoronto.ca/hacknight_projects Hacknights are held in the studio at Inter/Access, 9 Ossington Ave., at Queen, and begin at 6:30pm. (Best to arrive on time... we won't start over again for latecomers.) Note: if you're new to Wireless Toronto, hacknights might not be the best introduction. Our focus is on the project, and on building more than chatting. But if you're good with a soldering iron and/or writing php and want to get your hands "dirty", do drop in. RSVP at upcoming: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/175672 --- 4) New hotspot: St. Louis Bar & Grill Downtown omnivores may be happy to know that the newest Wireless Toronto hotspot is at St. Louis Bar & Grill, in the Atrium on Bay (and with an entrance on Edward Street, right across from World's Biggest Bookstore). It opened just this summer, and looks great!
